Biya third term
In his New Year message Cameroonian President Paul Biya hinted that he may amend the country’s constitution by removing a clause that limits the Head of State to two terms in office. This would allow him to stand for President again in 2011 if he desires.
Biya said his government was considering the amendment in response to popular demand, but opposition parties and NGOs have described it as an attempt to manipulate public opinion.
Biya came to power in 1982 and since then has amended the constitution to change the presidential term of office from five to seven years.
